Quantitative Analysis in Maritime Accident Rehearsal and Investigation

    • How the Quantitative Analysis can help maritime accident Investigation is demonstrated. A real accident is simu- lated. Explicit dynamics and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis shows that the ships collided more than once. The first collision happens at starboard bow shell plating of ship B,lasting 0.5 seconds. This makes ship A goes backwards in large transvers speed. Because of the resistance of water,it comes back to hit ship B second time after 2.9 seconds, which causes bow shell plating of ship A sunken and scratches vertically the stempost of ship B with the upper collision point 0.9 m above the waterline and lower end 1.7 m below the waterline. This analysis explains the actual damages of two ships and adopted by the judger.
